Musk Accuses OpenAI Lawyer of Trying to ‘Trick’ Him in Combative Testimony

Elon Musk and OpenAI CEO Sam Altman exchanged heated words during the third day of trial over Musk’s lawsuit against Altman and the AI company. On Monday, Musk took to the stand, where he was aggressively cross-examined by OpenAI’s lawyer, Martin Pistorius.

Musk testified that he was unaware of the details of an agreement between OpenAI and his electric vehicle company, Tesla, regarding the use of Autopilot technology in vehicles. However, Altman’s lawyer, Pistorius, pressed Musk on whether he had not been fully informed about the terms of the deal, which allegedly breaches a non-disclosure agreement (NDA) that Musk signed with OpenAI.

Musk denied that he was trying to deceive anyone and insisted that he had done his due diligence in understanding the partnership between Tesla and OpenAI. Pistorius, on the other hand, argued that Musk’s lack of transparency was deliberate, aimed at concealing the true nature of the agreement.

The exchange turned combative as Pistorius accused Musk of trying to “trick” him during cross-examination. Pistorius stated, “We’re not just talking about a simple misunderstanding or a miscommunication; we’re dealing with a deliberate attempt to deceive and manipulate the facts.”

Musk fired back, claiming that he was being unfairly targeted by Pistorius’s aggressive questioning. Musk said, “I’m shocked at the level of hostility and personal attacks that are being made towards me during this trial. I’m not trying to deceive anyone; I’m just telling it like it is.”

The tense standoff continued throughout the day, with both sides presenting their cases in front of Judge Wendy Liu. The jury remained impassive, but the atmosphere in the courtroom was electric.

As the trial continues, the stakes are high for Musk and OpenAI. If found liable for breaching the NDA, Tesla could face significant financial losses and damage to its reputation.

The case has raised important questions about the nature of innovation, intellectual property, and the role of big tech companies in shaping the future of AI. Stay informed with headlines.com
