MIZORAM, India – In a historic milestone, the Indian government has declared Mizoram “insurgency-free” after the last militant group in the state laid down its arms. The surrender of 43 cadres, including Mr. Sanate, was marked with a “homecoming and arms laying ceremony” at Sesawng near Aizawl on Wednesday.
The declaration comes after years of efforts by the government to bring an end to the insurgency in Mizoram, which has been plagued by militancy since the early 1990s. The state has seen frequent clashes between security forces and militant groups, resulting in loss of life and property.
According to sources, the surrender was facilitated by a combination of diplomatic efforts and economic incentives. Mr. Sanate, who is reportedly one of the senior leaders of the group, had been instrumental in convincing his fellow cadres to lay down arms.
The “homecoming and arms laying ceremony” was attended by senior officials from the government, including the Governor of Mizoram, as well as representatives from various civil society organizations. The event marked a significant moment in the state’s history, with many hailing it as a major victory for peace.
“This is a historic day for our state,” said Chief Minister Zoramthanga, who attended the ceremony. “The declaration of Mizoram as insurgency-free is a testament to the hard work and dedication of our security forces and government officials.”
The Indian Army has been deployed in Mizoram since the early 1990s to maintain law and order in the state. The deployment has been accompanied by numerous crackdowns on militant groups, resulting in the arrest and prosecution of several key leaders.
However, the last remaining militant group, known as the Mizo National Front (MNF), had refused to lay down arms until it received a guarantee of security and economic benefits. The government had offered the group a package deal, which included provision of jobs, infrastructure development, and other incentives.
The surrender marks a significant shift in the state’s trajectory, with many analysts hailing it as a major step towards peace and stability. “This is a huge achievement for our country,” said Dr. Vijay Kumar Pandey, a renowned expert on insurgency. “It demonstrates that even the most hardened militant groups can be brought to the negotiating table.”
The declaration of Mizoram as insurgency-free has been welcomed by civil society organizations and leaders from across the state. “This is a momentous day for our people,” said R Lalnunsanga, a local politician. “We are proud of our security forces and government officials for bringing an end to the insurgency.”
As the state begins to rebuild and recover from years of conflict, residents are expressing hope and optimism about the future. “I am thrilled that the insurgency is over,” said S Varte, a local resident. “We can now focus on rebuilding our communities and moving forward with our lives.”
