The United States has announced that it will guide stranded ships through the strategic Strait of Hormuz in response to a growing naval buildup by Iran in the region. The move comes amid heightened tensions between Washington and Tehran, with more than 100 aircraft and 15,000 personnel set to participate in the operation starting on Monday.
According to US officials, the military exercise will be aimed at “ensuring the free flow of navigation” through the strait, which connects the Persian Gulf to the Arabian Sea. The operation will involve a combination of air and sea power, with aircraft from the US Navy, Air Force, and Coast Guard joining forces with ships from other NATO allies.
The announcement was made by President Donald Trump on Twitter earlier today, saying: “The United States will guide any ship through the Strait of Hormuz, no matter what. We will not let Iran disrupt the free flow of navigation.”
Tensions in the region have been escalating in recent weeks, with Iranian authorities seizing several oil tankers and threatening to seize more. The incident on Friday, which saw a British-flagged tanker detained by Iranian forces, has raised concerns about the security of shipping lanes through the strait.
US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo said in a statement that “the United States will not tolerate any threats to the freedom of navigation” in the region. “We will take all necessary measures to protect American interests and those of our allies,” he added.
The operation is set to involve some 100 aircraft, including F-35 fighter jets, Apache helicopters, and P-8 Poseidon maritime patrol planes. More than 15,000 personnel from the US military, as well as troops from NATO countries such as France, the Netherlands, and Denmark, will also be participating.
The presence of a large naval force in the region is seen as a show of strength by the United States, aimed at deterring Iranian aggression. However, critics have warned that the operation could escalate tensions further, potentially leading to a wider conflict.
Iranian officials have dismissed US claims of concern over security in the region, saying that Tehran’s actions are justified in response to “American aggression” against Iran.
The Strait of Hormuz is a vital waterway for global energy supplies, with over 20% of the world’s oil passing through it. Any disruption to shipping lanes could have significant economic implications, and have major repercussions for the global economy.
