The Department of Civil Supplies has purchased a record 12.38 lakh tonnes of paddy from 1.54 lakh farmers so far this season, with a total payment of ₹1,129 crore made to the ryots.
According to Commissioner of Civil Supplies M. Stephen Ravindra, the department is operating at full capacity across the State to handle the inflow of paddy. The record purchase is a testament to the department’s efforts to support farmers and ensure food security in the state.
The 12.38 lakh tonnes of paddy purchased so far includes 5.25 lakh tonnes from the first phase of procurement, which concluded on October 15, and 7.13 lakh tonnes from the second phase, which is still ongoing. The remaining 1.97 lakh tonnes are expected to be procured in the next few weeks.
The payment of ₹1,129 crore has been made to the farmers who sold their paddy to the department. This amount includes ₹643 crore paid for the first phase of procurement and ₹486 crore paid for the second phase. The remaining ₹129 crore is pending due to certain technical issues that arose during the payment process.
The Commissioner stated that the department is committed to paying the remaining amount as soon as possible. “We are working tirelessly to resolve the technical issue and make the payment to the farmers,” he said.
The record purchase of paddy by the Department of Civil Supplies is a significant milestone for the state’s food security efforts. The department’s efforts have helped to ensure that farmers receive fair prices for their produce, while also meeting the state’s food requirements.
The state government has been working closely with the department to implement the Public Private Partnership (PPP) model, which aims to improve the efficiency and effectiveness of the procurement process. The PPP model involves partnering with private companies to procure paddy from farmers, while also providing training and support to farmers to improve their production levels.
The success of the Department of Civil Supplies’ efforts is a testament to the state government’s commitment to supporting farmers and ensuring food security in the state. As the procurement season continues, the department remains committed to its goal of procuring 15 lakh tonnes of paddy this season.
