In a shocking turn of events, portions of the home of a man accused of murder were razed down by angry mob members in the Uttam Nagar area of Delhi yesterday. The incident comes on the heels of a tribunal’s decision to reject an appeal for a stay on the conviction.
The accused, identified as Rakesh Kumar, was involved in a violent altercation with a group of friends at a local park in 2019. One person died during the scuffle, and Rakesh was arrested shortly after. His case has been ongoing ever since, with numerous hearings and appeals made by his lawyers.
Yesterday, however, the situation took a dramatic turn when a tribunal rejected an appeal filed by Rakesh’s lawyer for a stay on his conviction. The tribunal deemed that there was no sufficient evidence to prove Rakesh’s innocence, and therefore, he should face justice.
In response to the tribunal’s decision, a group of angry mob members stormed onto Rakesh’s residence in Uttam Nagar, wielding torches, sticks, and other objects. They set fire to several portions of his home, leaving it severely damaged.
“It was like a nightmare come true,” said Neeraj Kumar, a neighbor who witnessed the incident. “I saw people throwing stones and setting fire to Rakesh’s house. I didn’t know what to do, so I just watched in horror.”
Local authorities were quick to respond to the situation, deploying police personnel to calm down the crowd and put out the fires. However, by that time, significant damage had already been done.
“We understand the frustration and anger of the public towards Rakesh’s case,” said a spokesperson for the Delhi Police. “However, we cannot condone any form of violence or vandalism. We are taking this incident very seriously and will ensure that those responsible are brought to justice.”
The incident has sparked widespread outrage on social media, with many people expressing their disgust at the violent outburst.
“This is not the way to seek justice,” tweeted @JusticeSeeker123. “We should be demanding fairness and equality, not resorting to violence.”
Others have called for Rakesh’s conviction to be upheld and his sentence to be carried out.
“It’s time someone takes responsibility for their actions,” tweeted @LawAndOrderMatter. “Rakesh’s case has dragged on for years, and it’s time he faces the music.”
The incident serves as a reminder of the fragility of the justice system in India and the need for vigilance in ensuring that justice is served fairly.
