Kerala is all set to witness a thrilling conclusion to its assembly polls on Thursday as the ruling Left Democratic Front (LDF) eyes a third consecutive term in office, while the opposition United Democratic Front (UDF) hopes to stage a comeback. The two-day polls, which concluded on April 9 with a record turnout of 79.7% voter participation, saw a total of 883 candidates contesting for the 140 assembly seats.
As per the latest updates, an estimated 2.15 crore voters cast their ballots, leaving behind nearly 0.56 crore votes that were either invalid or spoiled. The Election Commission (EC) is set to begin the counting process at 8 am on Thursday, with the results expected to be announced by noon.
The ruling LDF, led by Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan of the Communist Party of India (Marxist), has been in power since 2016 and has consistently maintained a strong hold over the state’s politics. The opposition UDF, comprising the Congress party, BJP, and other regional parties, is confident that it can oust the LDF from power.
The UDF had fielded 101 candidates, while the LDF put up 115 candidates. However, despite its numerical advantage, the LDF has managed to maintain a strong grip on the state’s politics due to its formidable organizational network and loyal base of support.
The BJP, which is part of the UDF, has made significant inroads in Kerala’s rural areas and is expected to perform well in the polls. The Congress party, however, seems to be facing a crisis, with several top leaders quitting or being expelled from the party.
In contrast, the LDF has been able to maintain its unity and cohesion, despite some internal squabbles. Vijayan and his Cabinet colleagues have been camping in Thiruvananthapuram since April 9, where they are busy conducting a thorough review of the campaign strategy and preparation for the counting day.
As the counting process gets underway, voters across Kerala are holding their breaths, hoping that their favorite candidates will emerge victorious. The outcome of the polls is expected to have significant implications not just for the state’s politics but also for the national scenario.
With its strong hold over the state’s economy and social services, a third term for the LDF could send ripples across the country. On the other hand, if the UDF manages to oust the LDF from power, it could be a significant shift in Kerala’s politics and have far-reaching consequences.
Only time will tell which front emerges victorious on counting day. One thing is certain, however – the people of Kerala are eager to exercise their democratic rights and decide the fate of the state’s future.
