BERLIN — German officials say the U.S. troop withdrawal from Afghanistan is “foreseeable” and not a surprise, amid warnings from President Donald Trump that more cuts are on the way.
The decision to pull out 5,000 troops from the war-torn country has sparked concern among NATO allies, who fear it will embolden extremist groups and undermine regional stability.
Germany’s Foreign Minister Heiko Maas said in a statement that Berlin is “watching the situation closely” and urged Washington to maintain its commitment to Afghanistan’s security.
“We understand the need for adjustments in U.S. military policy, but we also expect our allies to maintain their engagement in the region,” Maas said.
Trump has long been critical of the U.S. involvement in Afghanistan, saying it is a “lose-lose” situation and that American troops are not needed there. However, his decision to pull out 5,000 troops has raised concerns among lawmakers and military officials back in Washington.
Two senior Republicans, Senator Lindsey Graham and Representative Adam Kinzinger, have voiced their opposition to the troop withdrawal, warning that it will embolden terrorist groups and compromise U.S. national security interests.
“This is a disaster waiting to happen,” Graham said in a statement. “If we leave Afghanistan now, we’ll be creating a power vacuum that extremist groups will exploit.”
Kinzinger echoed Graham’s concerns, saying that the troop withdrawal will have serious consequences for regional stability.
“The Taliban will not stop until they’ve conquered all of Afghanistan and beyond,” Kinzinger warned. “This decision is a recipe for disaster and puts our entire national security strategy at risk.”
Despite the opposition from some lawmakers, Trump remains committed to his decision to pull out troops from Afghanistan.
“We’re going to make it work,” Trump said in a statement. “It’s going to be tremendous for Afghanistan, and it’s going to be great for the United States. We’ll see what happens next, but we’re confident that everything will work out.”
The U.S. troop withdrawal is part of a broader effort by Trump to reduce American military involvement around the world.
In recent weeks, Trump has announced plans to cut funding for several U.S. military programs and has warned of more cuts to come.
“We’re going to make our military so strong and powerful that you won’t even recognize it,” Trump said. “And we’ll be able to afford it because we’re going to cut spending in other areas.”
The impact of these cuts is still unclear, but one thing is certain: the U.S. military will undergo a significant transformation in the coming years.
