The Andhra Pradesh State Meteorological Department has predicted that 64 mandals in the state are likely to witness a severe heatwave on May 2, with temperatures expected to soar to scorching levels. The warning comes just hours after Piduguralla recorded a sizzling temperature of 45.9°C, the highest so far this season.
According to the APSDMA (Andhra Pradesh State Phoenological Department of Meteorology), light rains accompanied by thunderstorms and lightning are likely at isolated places in Srikakulam, Vizianagaram, ASR, Polavaram, Visakhapatnam, Chittoor, and Tirupati districts. However, these rain showers will not be enough to provide relief from the sweltering heat, which is expected to peak on May 2.
The heatwave warning has been issued for several mandals in the state, including Nellore, Ongole, Kurnool, and Kadapa, among others. The APSDMA has advised people to take necessary precautions to avoid heat-related illnesses, particularly during the day hours when temperatures are expected to soar to extreme levels.
Piduguralla, a small town in Guntur district, recorded a temperature of 45.9°C at 3:30 pm yesterday, making it the highest recorded temperature so far this season. The previous highest temperature was recorded in Piduguralla on May 10, 2018, when the mercury soared to 46.1°C.
The heatwave is expected to worsen over the next few days, with temperatures predicted to remain above 45°C in many parts of the state. The APSDMA has urged people to take necessary precautions, including staying indoors during the hottest part of the day and avoiding outdoor activities that can exacerbate dehydration.
The heatwave has also led to a surge in demand for cooling drinks and fans, as well as an increase in sales of air conditioners. However, experts warn that the heatwave can have serious consequences if not taken seriously, particularly for vulnerable populations such as the elderly, children, and people with pre-existing medical conditions.
The government has been warned about the impending heatwave and is taking necessary steps to mitigate its impact. The Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister has announced plans to provide free electricity to farmers who use electric fans during the day hours to combat the heat.
As the heatwave continues to bear down on the state, residents are advised to take all necessary precautions to stay safe. With temperatures expected to soar to extreme levels, it is essential to prioritize health and safety above all else.
