LONDON — British counterterrorism police are investigating an arson attack at a former synagogue in London, amid growing concerns about the rise of extremism in the country. The incident comes as the UK’s national threat level was raised to severe last week, following a series of violent attacks and terrorist plots.
According to eyewitnesses, the fire broke out at the former synagogue on Saturday evening, causing significant damage to the building. Firefighters were called to the scene and extinguished the flames, but not before they had caused extensive damage.
The Metropolitan Police Service confirmed that the incident is under investigation, with counterterrorism officers working alongside local police to determine the cause of the fire. While officials have not released any details about potential suspects or motives, they are exploring all possible scenarios.
“This incident has raised concerns among our community and we want to assure everyone that we take these threats very seriously,” said a spokesperson for the Metropolitan Police Service. “We will leave no stone unturned in our investigation and will work closely with our partners to ensure that those responsible are brought to justice.”
The attack on the former synagogue has sparked fears of an escalation in anti-Semitic attacks in the UK, which have been on the rise in recent years. According to a report by the Community Security Trust, there were 1,178 reported anti-Semitic incidents in England and Wales last year, with many more unreported.
The incident also comes as the UK’s national threat level was raised to severe by the Joint Terrorism Analysis Centre (JTAC) last week. The JTAC warned that the threat from terrorism remains high, with the risk of attacks increasing due to the evolving nature of terrorist groups and their tactics.
“We are seeing a shift in the way that terrorists operate, with a greater emphasis on lone-wolf attacks and smaller-scale operations,” said Mike Adams, a senior intelligence analyst at the JTAC. “This makes it increasingly difficult for us to detect and disrupt these threats.”
The Met Police has pledged to increase patrols in Jewish communities across London, particularly in areas with high concentrations of synagogues and other Jewish institutions.
In response to the arson attack, local community leaders have called on the government to take action to address the growing threat of anti-Semitism. “This incident is just the tip of the iceberg,” said Rabbi Abraham Motzkin, leader of the London Jewish Leadership Council. “We need a comprehensive strategy to tackle anti-Semitism and ensure that our communities feel safe and protected.”
The investigation into the arson attack at the former synagogue continues, with officials urging anyone with information to come forward.
